Overview
Application Engineer; RF Jobs in Saint-Laurent, Canada at Focus Microwaves Inc.
Position: Application Engineer (RF
Focus Microwaves is a leader in electronic test and measurement equipment. Our engineering organization is a premier technical engineering force for test systems used to characterize active RF devices from R&D to production. As a Focus Microwaves Application Engineer (RF), you will work with some of the world’s leading technology companies to define and implement the latest trends in RF and microwave device characterization, including load pull, noise, and pulsed measurement systems.
We are looking for an Application Engineer (RF), ideally with a Technical Degree in Electrical Engineering, RF/Microwave Engineering, or a related field, who is passionate about engineering. We are on hyper-growth mode, and we are looking for an individual who wants to make an impact working for a game-changing company that builds a disruptive product with a mission to innovate.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Provide expert technical and application support to customers using Focus Microwaves load pull, noise parameter, and pulsed measurement systems, from initial setup through advanced device characterization.
- Set up, configure, and demonstrate RF and microwave test systems, including VNA-based measurements, on-wafer probe station work, and coaxial test benches.
- Perform and validate VNA calibrations (SOLT, TRL, LRRM), define reference planes, and apply de-embedding and error correction to ensure measurement accuracy.
- Conduct load pull, noise parameter, and pulsed IV/RF measurements to characterize active RF devices, and interpret and present results to customers.
- Troubleshoot and debug RF measurement setups, diagnosing issues related to calibration, contact integrity, instrumentation, and measurement uncertainty.
- Develop and maintain measurement automation routines using the VISA standard and SCPI commands with Python, C#, C++, or MATLAB to streamline customer workflows.
- Deliver training sessions, technical presentations, and product demonstrations to customers, both remotely and on-site.
- Collaborate with R&D, sales, and engineering teams to translate customer requirements into solutions and to inform ongoing product improvements.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers and internal teammates, acting as a trusted technical advisor.
- Document measurement procedures, application notes, and best practices to support customers and internal knowledge sharing.
- Travel to customer sites as needed (approximately 10% of the time) to support installations, training, and on-site measurement campaigns.
- Maintain a passion for continuous learning by staying current with emerging trends in RF and microwave device characterization.
Qualifications
This position requires the following skillsets and attributes with an emphasis on technical expertise and communication skills.
- Hands-on experience operating RF measurement instruments, in particular Vector Network Analyzers (VNA), as well as signal generators, spectrum analyzers, and power meters.
- Practical experience with on-wafer probe station measurements, including probe placement, contact integrity, and handling of sensitive devices.
- Solid RF and microwave fundamentals, including S-parameters, impedance matching, and the Smith chart.
- Strong understanding of VNA calibration techniques (SOLT, TRL, LRRM) and reference-plane definition for both coaxial and on-wafer setups.
- Familiarity with error correction, de-embedding, and measurement uncertainty in RF characterization.
- General prototyping, debugging, and troubleshooting skills in an RF test environment.
- Programming skills are optional but strongly preferred. Experience automating measurement instruments (VISA standard, SCPI commands) using Python, C#, C++, MATLAB, or similar is a significant asset.
- Exposure to load pull, noise parameter, or pulsed IV/RF measurement systems is an advantage.
Additional characteristics of candidates we are seeking for this position include:
- Independent professional that works best under broad and general directions.
- Ability to create a vision and convey the message in a persuasive manner.
- Sociable, people-oriented, outgoing, and seeks recognition.
- Passion for continuous learning in RF/microwave…
