Role Purpose
The Director of Engineering leads SOLS Energy's entire engineering function and is the final technical authority across the full lifecycle of every solar PV and BESS system we design, deliver, and operate — from feasibility and design through procurement, construction, testing & commissioning, and long-term asset performance.
Sitting above the Technical Department, this role sets engineering standards, governs design quality and final sign-off, builds and develops the engineering team, owns technical risk and regulatory compliance, and drives innovation and new capability (BESS, EV charging, monitoring platforms, and new market segments). The role carries direct accountability for engineering quality, project technical integrity, fleet performance, and the commercial outcomes that flow from technical decisions.
In line with the Technical Department's core purpose, this role exists to protect system quality, reliability, and technical credibility as the guardian of system integrity from design to operations and troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities
- Set Engineering Standards and Governance
- Define SOLS Energy's technical specifications for PV and BESS systems, and the standards EPC contractors and vendors must meet.
- Set, document, and continuously improve engineering standards, design rules, and SOPs across the Technical Department.
- Ensure all engineering output complies with MS 1837, IEC standards, ST, SEDA, and TNB requirements.
- Hold Final Design Authority
- Review and approve all designs produced by the team including single-line diagrams (DC/AC), sizing and component selection, protection coordination, earthing and lightning, structural designs, BESS configurations, and BOMs.
- Maintain design quality gate before anything is released to procurement, construction, or the client.
- Act as the final escalation point for complex or contested technical issues.
- Lead Engineering Across the Full Project Lifecycle
- Drive engineering from feasibility and design through procurement, construction, testing & commissioning, energisation, and handover to O&M.
- Lead the engineering effort through T&C, back-feed, IOD, and COD for utility-scale and C&I projects.
- Coordinate engineering, procurement, project, finance, and external parties to deliver on time, on budget, and to specification.
- Drive Tenders, Proposals, and Authority Approvals
- Lead the technical and commercial content of tenders and proposals, including EPCC tender documents.
- Own authority submissions and approvals across TNB, ST, SEDA, CIDB, and related agencies.
- Provide technical support to business development, including feasibility studies and techno-economic input.
- Govern Equipment, Vendors, and Technical Due Diligence
- Approve key equipment including modules, inverters, batteries, transformers, RMUs, MSBs, and balance-of-plant.
- Lead technical due diligence and benchmarking of suppliers, OEMs, and technologies, and of M&A or asset-acquisition targets where relevant.
- Maintain the approved-product and vendor standards the company buys against.
- Lead and Develop the Technical Team
- Lead and develop the department through the Senior Technical Manager and section leads, including workload planning, KPI-setting, and performance reviews.
- Coach and train design, project, and technical engineers; build capability, standardise workflows, and develop succession.
- Plan engineering resources, tools, and software to match the project pipeline.
- Own Technical Performance, Compliance, and Innovation
- Oversee asset and fleet performance including monitoring, performance ratio, availability, and repowering or improvement decisions.
- Manage engineering budgets, project costing, and value engineering; flag technical risks with commercial or P&L impact.
- Champion QA/QC, HSE, and safety across all sites; lead new capability development including BESS, EV charging, hybrid/off-grid, and monitoring platforms, including entry into new market segments.
Qualifications & Requirements
Essential
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) as a Professional Engineer (Ir.) and/or with the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) as a Professional Technologist (Ts.).
- SEDA GCPV (Grid-Connected Photovoltaic) certified Qualified Person.
- CIDB Green Card.
- Valid driving licence (Class D).
- Minimum 7 years' progressive experience in solar PV / renewable energy spanning design, EPC delivery, and O&M, with a strong hands-on engineering foundation.
- At least 3 years in an engineering leadership or managerial role with direct reports.
- Demonstrated experience across the full solar lifecycle and across residential, C&I, and large-scale solar (LSS), with battery energy storage (BESS) exposure.
- Proven ability to set technical standards and give final design approval on PV systems, cable sizing, protection coordination, structural designs, and BOMs.
- Strong hands-on background in detailed electrical and PV design, with the depth to review and stress-test other engineers' work.
- Strong working proficiency in PVsyst, Helioscope, and AutoCAD (SketchUp or PVCase an advantage); familiarity with SCADA/monitoring platforms.
- Sound command of MS 1837, ST, SEDA, and TNB interconnection requirements and IEC standards.
- Track record leading multi-disciplinary teams and managing external consultants, contractors, and suppliers.
Preferred
- SEDA OGPV (Off-Grid Photovoltaic) certification.
- ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer (ACPE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).
- ST Competent Electrical Engineer / Chargeman (33kV or 132kV) where the role covers grid-interconnection scope.
- Master's degree (Power Systems / Renewable Energy) or MBA.
- PMP (Project Management Professional) certification.
