The Position
Under the general leadership of the Electric Utility Director, the Electric Engineering Manager performs engineering and planning for the District’s electrical system. This position performs difficult work on highly technical problems and participates in the formulation and enforcement of District policies, standards and specifications. The incumbent will play a key role in implementing the District’s strategic plan while overseeing a team of two highly skilled professional engineers.
The Electric Engineering Manager will have the opportunity to:
- Provide team leadership to help accomplish an ambitious strategic plan, including large capital improvement projects
- Provide leadership and oversight for engineering department functions including design, planning, standards development, construction project management, electric SCADA system development, system hardening, and circuit protector systems.
- Create and maintain a team culture which encourages innovation, communication, creativity, and commitment to meeting goals and continuous improvement
- Provide coaching, support, and training plans to enhance individual team member’s professional development
- Update and implement projects in support of the District’s electric system master plan
- Participate in the movement toward local, clean power generation, including community solar projects
- Positively impact TDPUD’s customers, the larger Truckee-Tahoe communities, and the environment

Challenges and Opportunities
Like most utilities, TDPUD faces the many challenges associated with an aging infrastructure. The community is also growing and evolving. Significant investment will be required to maintain the quality and reliability of electrical services Truckee residents and businesses have come to expect. The Electric Engineering Manager will be tasked with the responsibility for overseeing several complex projects simultaneously including:
- Substation reconstruction
- Extension of the fiberoptic network to all TDPUD facilities
- Rebuilding and/or replacing infrastructure throughout the District’s service area.
Other potential focus areas include:
- System hardening to minimize the potential for fires
- Enhancing the District’s use of SCADA, AMI and circuit protection systems to better anticipate and respond to power outages.
Given the local climate, project planning and implementation need to be thoughtfully coordinated so outside work can be accomplished during the construction season.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is an innovative, strategic, and effective leader who is inclusive, motivational, and collaborative. They have strong people and project management skills. They are adept at planning, organizing, and assigning work. They enjoy walking job sites with the members of their team, learning from them, and including them in the decision-making process. Finally, they are comfortable living in a location characterized by chilly, snowy winters where it is not uncommon to receive up to three feet of snowfall in 24 hours.
Qualifying Education and Experience
Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
graduation from an ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), with an emphasis on power systems AND six years of increasing responsibility in utilities or consulting engineering experience relating to electric utility planning and operations with emphasis on design, construction, and operation of electrical distribution systems. This position requires registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer with the State of California.
Compensation and Benefits
TDPUD provides competitive compensation and an excellent benefits package to full-time, regular employees. The salary range for this position is $196,805 – $239,212 per year, DOQ.
