We are recruiting a Head of Engineering to lead the engineering function across a significant Australian battery storage portfolio, reporting directly to executive leadership. The portfolio includes flagship utility-scale projects, a significantly broader development pipeline, and a fleet of distributed BESS sites nationally. This is a senior, business-critical position with accountability for engineering decisions across the full asset lifecycle.
The role
As the senior technical authority for the business, you will set the design basis and engineering standards, govern technical sign-off across all project phases, and build an in-house engineering team and delivery model that reduces reliance on external consultants as the business scales.
Key responsibilities
- Lead technical due diligence, feasibility studies and concept design for new sites and acquisitions
- Own technical specifications, tender documentation and contractor selection for Balance of Plant and equipment-supply packages
- Direct the owner's engineering function through construction, including design acceptance, factory and site acceptance testing, and commissioning hold points
- Support the Grid team through AEMO connection, registration and Generator Performance Standards processes
- Own technical handover to Asset Management and verify performance guarantees, including capacity, round-trip efficiency and response
- Build and develop a high-performing engineering team
- Hold accountability for HSSE in design and engineering activities, particularly during high-risk switching and energisation
Candidate requirements
- Bachelor's degree or higher in electrical, power systems or a related engineering discipline
- 15+ years' experience in utility-scale electrical infrastructure (BESS, solar, wind or substations), including high-voltage works
- At least 5 years leading engineering teams or an owner's engineering function
- Demonstrated experience across the full asset lifecycle, with accountability for technical sign-off
- Working knowledge of NEM connection processes, AEMO registration and Generator Performance Standards
- Willingness to travel to project sites across the NEM
Desirable: CPEng and/or NER registration, HV switching qualifications, and experience scaling an engineering function across a multi-gigawatt pipeline.
