Job Summary
The Melting Process Technical Manager is responsible for reviewing technical documents, defining chemical compositions and charge calculations, and developing key production documentation for melting operations. This includes creating and maintaining Work Instructions, SOPs, Travelers, and technical manuals for Ingot Making and furnace operations (EAF, Induction Furnace, LF, VD, AOD, VOD). The role supports production readiness, process optimization, quality compliance, and provides technical input to sales feasibility and quoting activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical & Production Support
- Define and control melting practices for raw charge materials to achieve target chemistry and melt characteristics.
- Calculate charge mix and determine chemical composition requirements for production.
- Create and maintain Work Instructions (WI), SOPs, and Travelers for melting shop processes.
- Define technical requirements for each melting section (EAF, Induction, LF, VD, AOD, VOD, ingot making).
- Develop and maintain the Manufacturing Process Schedule (MPS) considering commercial feasibility.
- Define melting temperatures and parameters and ensure process stability.
- Troubleshoot furnace/process issues and implement corrective actions.
- Attend regular meetings with production teams, job managers, and engineers to explain WI, SOPs, and MPS.
- Prepare and manage technical manuals and process documentation.
- Support initial product development, pre-production methods, prototype production, and evaluation in collaboration with the factory.
- Quality, Compliance & EHS
- Define product quality standards throughout the melting process and ensure compliance.
- Coordinate with Quality teams to address quality issues and implement corrective measures.
- Perform quality problem analysis and establish countermeasures (RCA/CAPA).
- Prepare/define EHS requirements for the Melting Shop and support safe operations.
- Support certification and qualification readiness and requirements.
- Process Optimization
- Identify and implement process improvement opportunities to enhance efficiency, productivity, yield, and cost-effectiveness.
- Analyze production data and performance metrics to optimize melting parameters and maximize yield.
- Support implementation of new techniques, technologies, or equipment upgrades to improve melting processes.
- Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of melting operations (process parameters, production data, quality test results).
- Provide regular reports and analysis to management on operational issues and improvement initiatives.
- Provide technical support for product documentation creation and review factory-produced documentation.
- Review qualification/certification development results for special process operators, NDT personnel, and inspectors; provide feedback and technical guidance.
- Technical Support for Sales / Estimation
- Support manufacturing feasibility reviews for items under estimation/quotation.
- Support designing production processes for quoting to meet customer technical requirements.
- Participate in technical meetings when support is requested by the sales team.
- Other Duties
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned to support business needs.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science/Engineering (or related field).
- Typically 10+ years of experience in melting processes within a manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of melting and refining operations: EAF, Induction Furnace, LF, VD, AOD, VOD, and metallurgical principles.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills with high attention to detail.
- Knowledge of industrial safety regulations and best practices.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams (Production, Quality, Maintenance, Sales).
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced industrial/manufacturing environment.
- Prior experience in a similar role is highly preferred.
- Strong teamwork and stakeholder management skills.
