About the Company
Founded in 1955 as Frontier Welding Works by Gyan Chandra Bhatia and incorporated in its present form in 1986, Frontier Alloy Steels Limited (FASL) has grown into a leading Indian manufacturer of precision-engineered components and systems for the railway sector. With over six decades of manufacturing heritage, FASL supplies critical parts and assemblies to Indian Railways and to railway Original Equipment Manufacturers in the United States and Europe.
Our manufacturing operations span four disciplines — steel castings, investment castings, fabricated products, and metal-bonded rubber — supporting flagship rolling stock platforms including Vande Bharat, LHB coaches, and locomotives. The company is committed to precision engineering, technical depth, and long-term excellence in service.
Our Paonta Sahib facility is in a phase of planned expansion, and we are strengthening our systems engineering capability to support new product programmes and deeper customer engagement.
About the Role
This is a full-time, on-site position for a Railway Systems Engineer at our Paonta Sahib facility. The role sits at the intersection of design, manufacturing, customer engagement, and standards — taking a system-level view of the railway components and assemblies FASL produces, and ensuring they perform reliably across the full operating envelope of Indian and international rolling stock.
The Railway Systems Engineer is expected to think beyond the individual part — to understand how a casting, a damper, a fastening, or a fabricated assembly behaves within a bogie, a coach, or a wagon, and how that behaviour interacts with track, load, speed, and service life. This is a senior technical voice in front of customers, RDSO, and international OEMs.
The role suits someone with a strong foundation in railway engineering principles — bogie kinematics, suspension, ride dynamics, structural integrity — combined with an interest in standards, qualification, and the realities of manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
Systems Engineering & Design Review
- Take a system-level view of FASL's product portfolio — castings, fabricated assemblies, dampers, rubber-metal bonded components, fastening systems — within the context of bogies, coaches, wagons, and locomotives
- Review designs, drawings, and engineering changes for system-level implications including ride behaviour, fatigue life, structural integrity, and interface compatibility
- Contribute to multi-body dynamic analysis, suspension behaviour studies, and ride index evaluation where relevant
- Support new product development from specification interpretation through prototype, validation, and series readiness
Customer & Standards Interface
- Serve as a senior technical interface with Indian Railways, RDSO, ICF, RCF, MCF, BLW, CLW, and international railway OEMs
- Interpret and apply railway standards including IRS, RDSO specifications, AAR, EN, UIC, and customer-specific specifications
- Lead technical reviews, design discussions, and qualification meetings with customers and certifying bodies
- Coordinate type tests, qualification programmes, and RDSO approvals end-to-end
Validation & Field Performance
- Define validation plans — load, fatigue, endurance, ride, and environmental testing — in line with applicable specifications
- Coordinate test execution with internal teams and external test houses
- Investigate field failures, returned components, and warranty cases; lead root-cause analysis and corrective action programmes
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Work closely with design, R&D, production, quality, and sales teams to translate customer requirements into manufacturable, qualifiable products
- Maintain technical documentation including specifications, qualification dossiers, test reports, and drawing approvals
- Support proposal preparation, tender response, and customer-specific technical submissions
Required Qualifications
- B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical, Production, Automotive, or Railway Engineering; M.Tech a plus
- 4–12 years of relevant experience in rolling stock, railway components, bogie systems, or railway OEM engineering
- Strong foundation in mechanical engineering, structural analysis, and fatigue behaviour
- Working proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, or NX); CAE familiarity (Ansys, Hyperworks, or equivalent) is a strong plus
- Sound understanding of bogie architecture, suspension systems, and rolling stock fundamentals
- Familiarity with railway standards — IRS, RDSO, AAR, EN, UIC — and the qualification process for railway components in India and abroad
- Strong written and verbal English; clear technical communication with customers, certifying bodies, and internal teams
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for customer visits, type tests, RDSO meetings, and field investigations
- Willingness to work on-site at Paonta Sahib
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience at a railway OEM, rolling stock manufacturer, RDSO-approved supplier, or major railway components company (Indian or international)
- Exposure to multi-body dynamics (MBD), ride dynamics (Sperling), Kalker creep theory, derailment coefficient, and damper modelling
- Hands-on experience with RDSO registration, vendor approval, or type-test coordination
- Familiarity with quality systems, including IRIS, ISO 9001, and IATF 16949
- Exposure to international rolling stock standards and AAR-regulated North American freight applications
- Demonstrated track record of leading technical engagements with customers and certifying bodies
What We Offer
- A senior technical role with genuine system-level scope across FASL's product portfolio
- Direct involvement in programmes for the Indian Railways flagship platforms and international railway OEMs
- A seat at the table for new product development, customer strategy, and technical roadmap discussions
- Sponsored training, certifications, and technical exchange opportunities with our international technology partners
- Compensation benchmarked at the senior end of the railway components segment, with performance-linked components
- Relocation and accommodation support for candidates moving to the Paonta Sahib region
- A workplace that values technical depth, structured thinking, and long-term mastery
