About the Role

Our Mechanical Engineers are responsible for the design of highly complex opto‑mechanical and electromechanical components from concept straight through to production. Although our work is driven by specific objectives, goals and defined boundaries, we execute our work under wide guidelines.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for mechanical design and analysis of complex opto‑mechanical and electromechanical products from concept through to production using modern CAD and analysis tools. Assigned projects are of an advanced nature and involve solving difficult technical problems.
  • Perform innovation and/or suggest ways to improve our systems and/or reduce cost.
  • Carry out complex and difficult engineering assignments requiring specialized engineering knowledge. Modify established methods and devise new approaches as necessary and complete difficult projects in a timely manner.
  • Serve as a major technical contributor or lead to the completion of project goals and objectives.
  • Contribute to the definition of departmental best practices and design approaches.
  • Work is assigned in terms of specific objectives and goals with defined boundaries.
  • Carry out work within wide guidelines with technical guidance and review available as required.
  • Give technical or project related guidance and direction to other staff; act as a lead on larger projects; mentor staff on complex design practices and development methods; provide a level of product‑level ownership.
  • Participate in design reviews as either a presenter or a reviewer.
  • Support the verification and validation of new product designs.
  • Keep in synchronization with mechanical industry trends and new technologies relevant to L3 Wescam’s present and future product development.

Required Capabilities

  • Proficient user of FEA for static and dynamics analysis, preferably ANSYS.
  • Proficient user of a CFD analysis package, preferably ANSYS.
  • Proficient knowledge of a 3D CAD system, preferably Solid Works.
  • Experience with Matlab or an equivalent mathematical application.
  • Well versed in mechanical dynamics and vibration.
  • Well versed in strength of materials and classical analysis methods.
  • Well versed in opto‑mechanical design principles.
  • Well versed in machining, casting, sheet metal, and composites manufacturing techniques and processes.
  • Well versed in rapid prototyping techniques and methods.
  • Well versed in Materials Science.
  • Technical leadership skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to prepare detailed technical reports and specifications.
  • A highly motivated, self‑starter.
  • Ability to learn and grow within a fast‑paced environment.
  • Meets the requirements of the Controlled Goods Registration Program and is eligible for a Canadian government security clearance.

Desired

Education and Experience s

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience (ideally with 8 years of Mechanical Systems Engineering experience).
  • Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience.
  • In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.

In the province of Ontario, Canada, the pay range for this position will be $102,000 to $152,000.
