Description
Performs manual, semi-skilled, and skilled work in support of Department of Public Works (DPW) operations across multiple divisions, including solid waste, streets, parks, and building maintenance. Employees may be assigned across divisions based on operational needs.

Reports to: Crew Leader / Supervisor/Manager
Directs: None
General Responsibilities
Performs labor and maintenance work across DPW divisions, including solid waste collection, infrastructure maintenance, grounds maintenance, and operational support.
Example of Duties

- Collect and load trash, compost/yard, and bulk items
- Clean and maintain City property, including streets, sidewalks, parks, and facilities
- Perform mowing, landscaping, and tree maintenance activities
- Remove snow and ice from City property using hand tools and equipment
- Assist with and perform street and sidewalk maintenance (e.g., pothole patching, debris removal, basic repairs)
- Install and maintain City signage and infrastructure
- Operate hand tools and power equipment (e.g., mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, jackhammers)
- Assist with maintenance and minor repairs of tools and equipment
- Support seasonal operations such as leaf collection and storm response
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Ability to perform manual and semi-skilled labor
- Ability to safely operate tools, vehicles, and equipment
- Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures
- Ability to work independently (Level II–III) and as part of a team
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships
Minimum Qualifications
Physical Demands and Working Environment
- Work requires operating a variety of tools, vehicles, and equipment in outdoor environments, including exposure to traffic, moving machinery, noise, debris, and varying weather conditions. Employees maybe required to work in inclement weather and around trucks, hydraulics, and other potentially hazardous conditions.
- This position involves the safe operation of hand tools, power tools, and equipment such as chainsaws, compressors, mowers, and other maintenance equipment commonly used in public works operations.
- Work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and performing manual labor. Employees must be able to:
- Lift and carry up to 49 pounds independently
- Lift items over 49 pounds using team lifting or appropriate mechanical assistance
- Work may involve exposure to solid waste, dust, dirt, chemicals, and other environmental conditions associated with public works operations.
Education And Experience
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Experience performing manual labor or public works operations preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record (required if operating City vehicles)
- CDL not required but preferred and may be required for certain assignments or advancement
