Design Engineer – Engine Jobs in Ann Arbor, MI at ADAPT Technology LLC.
We are seeking an experienced Engine Design Engineer to support the development of conventional, hybrid, and electrified powertrain systems. This role focuses on engine component design, technical problem-solving, supplier coordination, and supporting projects from initial design through production.
The ideal candidate will have strong automotive engine design experience, solid CAD and GD&T knowledge, and an understanding of engine peripheral systems and manufacturing processes.
What You’ll Do
- Design and develop engine and powertrain components using established engineering standards and processes.
- Create 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, technical reports, design documentation, and work instructions.
- Participate in design reviews and present design progress, technical risks, and key performance metrics.
- Develop design improvements to meet cost, weight, durability, quality, and performance targets.
- Coordinate with vehicle design, drivetrain, purchasing, manufacturing, and global engineering teams.
- Manage North American suppliers to support quality parts and on-time delivery at each project milestone.
- Review test, evaluation, and supplier quotation results to develop engineering countermeasures.
- Benchmark competitor and similar designs to identify opportunities for improved cost, quality, and customer value.
- Support continuous improvement of design processes and engineering deliverables.
- Provide hands-on support for engine and powertrain assembly activities as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
- At least four years of automotive design or product development experience.
- Strong engine design and development background.
- Experience creating detailed 3D models and 2D engineering drawings.
- Strong understanding of GD&T and engineering drawing standards.
- Knowledge of conventional, hybrid, and electrified powertrain systems.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work effectively with suppliers and cross-functional engineering teams.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable motor vehicle record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in engineering.
- Detailed design experience with internal combustion engine systems, including:
- Lubrication systems
- Belt and accessory drive systems
- Timing chain covers
- Fuel systems
- Cooling systems
- Intake and exhaust systems
- Experience with CREO, WBDM, or similar design tools.
- Familiarity with powertrain CAE tools such as FEA, CFD, or GT-Power.
- Knowledge of aluminum and iron castings, thermoplastics, stampings, and forgings.
- Hands-on engine or powertrain assembly experience.
- Knowledge of engine and transmission manufacturing methods.
- Experience using DRBFM or similar design risk analysis methods.
- Understanding of quality management, supply chain management, and production engineering principles.
- Experience working with global or multicultural engineering teams.
